The Power of Presence: Embracing the "JUST SHOW UP!" Mindset

For 2026, I've chosen a straightforward and impactful mantra to direct my choices and focus: JUST SHOW UP! I borrowed this idea from a Peloton instructor who favored a straightforward guiding phrase over traditional New Year's resolutions, which often lead to discouragement early in the year. This simple tool allowed me to regularly check in with myself: "Am I showing up—for myself, for others, for my work, for what truly matters?"

As Q1 concludes, I've given myself a "B." I've certainly shown up consistently in many areas: completing my work on time, promptly responding to clients, sticking to my exercise routine, and checking in with friends and family.

However, I must be honest that I could be showing up better and more consistently. Specifically, I need to focus on being more present, proactively tackling tasks instead of procrastinating, and better remembering important details in the lives of those I care about.

I'm sharing this reflection for a couple of reasons:

  1. Q1 Check-in Opportunity: The beginning of the 2nd quarter is the perfect time to review your own goals, plans, and values. Be honest about your successes and areas needing improvement. This honest assessment offers a valuable reframing as you head into the new quarter.

  2. A Framework for Showing Up: If my personal mantra resonates with you, I want to offer a framework for how you can apply "Just Show Up" in your own life. Keep reading…

The Leader's Intentional Framework: How to JUST SHOW UP!

For a leader, JUST SHOW UP! translates into a commitment to presence, vulnerability, and setting an undeniable example for the team.

1. Leading by Example: Show Up for Yourself

Before you can inspire others, you must be a model of the behavior you want to see.

  • Show Up for Your Vision: Consistently communicate the "why" behind the work. Your unwavering belief is the anchor for your team.

  • Show Up for Your Development: Dedicate time, even if brief, to learning, reflection, and seeking feedback. Your growth models the importance of continuous improvement.

  • Show Up Authentically: Don’t hide your challenges. Sharing moments of vulnerability—when you have to "just show up" despite feeling overwhelmed—builds trust and humanizes your leadership.

2. Building a Culture of Consistency: Show Up for Your Team

A leader's consistent presence creates a stable, high-trust environment where others feel safe to commit to their own "showing up."

  • Show Up to Listen: Be present in one-on-one meetings. Put the phone down. Active listening is the highest form of respect and helps you offer the best strategy, just as you do for clients.

  • Show Up with Support, Not Scrutiny: When a team member struggles, your first reaction should be to help them "show up" again, not to criticize their momentary absence. Ask, "What do you need to get back on track?"

  • Show Up to Acknowledge Effort: Celebrate the act of showing up, especially for difficult tasks. The person who consistently tackles the mundane but necessary tasks deserves recognition as much as the one who closes the big deal. This reinforces the idea that consistency is the path to success.

By embracing the JUST SHOW UP! mindset, leaders liberate their teams from the paralyzing pursuit of perfection. This shift empowers a culture where daily, consistent action is prioritized, leading to a team defined by inevitable success, resilience, and reliability.

By keeping this mindset at the forefront of everything I do throughout the year, it allows me, as an individual and a business owner, to stay true to my commitments, keep projects moving forward and be present in the work. It frees me from focusing too much on what else could be done, and allows me to take meaningful action in my work. Perhaps this mentality will help you throughout the year as well.
